What usually happens when you get arrested for not paying your old court fines?

A friend of mine was arrested today for not paying $578.00 that he owed in old court fines and he has to go before a judge Monday. The crime he committed was his first offense-do you think he will just get probation and get out Monday or that they will make him stay until he pays the fine?

I was arrested the day after Christmas for being a week late paying a $60 speeding ticket. (It was traumatic for me. I had five kids. Wasn’t getting child support. Think the court has better ways to spend their time? I’m still angry about that.) Anyhow, I went in front of the judge and we made a payment plan and that was that. Poor guy. He should be able to make payment arrangements, but then again..some judges are jerks..but if it’s his first offense..shouldn’t be a problem…

Why should the government recieve fines levied by the courts?

For example, the victims of Madoff got but a pittance of their money back, but the court levied huge fines against Madoff, ensuring Mddoff would never be completely free until the fines were paid. Whatassurances do the victims have? Same in the Enron debacle.

I doubt the fines, even if eventually collected, will be enough to cover the costs of investigation, prosecution and incarceration. So it’s not like the government "made" money off the deal.

I’m wondering what the rules are for opting to sit out fines in jail? Haqs anyone ever done it or know someone who has?

I am guessing the rules apply to all people. You’re a prisoner… Do you think you’re special. You get paid in the range of 40.00$ dollars a day towards a fine.

What exactly does bankruptcy charge off like traffic or court fines?

I live in CA and owe almost $5,000 in traffic tickets and fines. My license was suspended and I REALLY need it back. If I file bankruptcy will it clear the fines off so I can get my license back?
I was told the only thing not removed was student loans. Is that correct?

A Chapter 7 will not clear the fines, but you might be able to pay them off over time in a Chapter 13. Contract a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys for a consultation.

If I’m 16 years old can I be charged or put into jail if I run away from home? Whats the maximum sentence time or fine?

You would be remanded back to your parents under akind of probation. Chronic running away could land you into a juvenile detention facility

What are the laws and possible fines for crossing the border into Canada?

Me and my friend are supposed to going to Canada tomorrow but we’ll be using another friend’s car who won’t be going with us on the trip. What are the laws surrounding that kind of thing? And also are there any fines/how much in relation to that? What would be the consequences if a law or regulation was broken?

If you are american and the car is registered to another american you should be fine with a signed letter including contact numbers from the owner. Also double check to make sure it is insured for the drivers.

Crossing the boarder relatively frequently I randomly get the question of "Who’s vehicle is this?" Seems the question will be even more frequent if the party is several friends travelling together. Lying is not a good idea as you are likely to get caught. Oh, and there are always follow up questions on ownership to double check on your answer.
