Are there fines or criminal punishments for running away from home when your underage?
If I’m 16 years old can I be charged or put into jail if I run away from home? Whats the maximum sentence time or fine?

Thank you.

You would be remanded back to your parents under akind of probation. Chronic running away could land you into a juvenile detention facility

Generally not, depending on the circumstances. However, when you are caught, and you will be… you face a strong chance of being put in a lock down school. It is only two more years, tough it out. You will feel different about it very soon.

Usually there is, but maybe its different depending on the state you are living in. Try staying with a friend or relative for a while instead.

it depends on what all your parents put in the report they could charge you with kidnapping which is about 6 months to a year

Probably not Riley, but it saddens me to see you suffering so… contact me if you want to talk. As I’ve said before, I’m always here for you. Don’t run. it will not help; it will actually make everything more complicated.

different states have different laws so it’s hard to determine. i am a former police officer and kids ran away i would go find them and take them back home or to a relative, then i would recommend them to some sort of family service to solve at home issues. i only pressed charges if the minor hit any family member, it’s battery. dont "run away" though. everything will be fine. if you’re being abused or something like that, then get a hold of child services ASAP

I feel exactly the same way you do. I am 16, and am seriously thinking about leaving. My parents are always smacking me around, and I’ve had enough of it. I’ve looked up some things, and running away is not illegal. It is not a crime. You cannot be charged, as long as you don’t harm anyone. There’s really nothing they can do about it.
When you are 14, your medical records are your own. When you are 16, they cannot force you to go back home. You’re almost an adult. I don’t know your situation, but I wish you luck, and hope it turns out okay.
